Mass measurements in jewelry require precision and a clear understanding of the units being used. Grams and milligrams are convenient for everyday measurements, while troy ounces and pennyweights are commonly used in precious-metal trading and jewelry work. Grains and metric carats serve more specialized purposes. The Jewelry Mass Unit Converter helps you convert a known mass between these units quickly and consistently, making it easier to compare measurements, interpret specifications, and work with values expressed in different measurement systems.

The converter is useful for jewelry making, gemstone handling, precious-metal trading, and comparing mass measurements across different unit systems.

What You Can Convert#

The converter supports seven mass units: milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg), troy ounces (toz), pennyweights (dwt), grains (gr), and metric carats (ct). Enter a known mass, select its unit, and choose the unit into which you want to convert it. The result is calculated using fixed conversion factors relative to grams.

Model and Limits#

The converter converts a known mass using fixed conversion factors relative to grams: 1 mg = 0.001 g; 1 kg = 1,000 g; 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 g; 1 pennyweight = 1.55517384 g; 1 grain = 0.06479891 g; and 1 metric carat = 0.2 g.

A metric carat (ct) is a unit of gemstone mass equal to 200 mg. It is not a measure of gold karat fineness. This tool converts mass units only; it does not calculate mass from volume, determine metal purity, or estimate the market value of jewelry or precious metals.
