Gemstone Dimensions & Geometry#

Explore the dimensions and geometric proportions of gemstones using measurement-based calculations. Understanding the relationships between length, width and depth helps describe a stone’s shape and dimensional characteristics. These measurements can support gemstone examination, comparison and documentation, while the appropriate geometric model determines which additional properties can be calculated.
Gemstone dimensions vary with the shape and cutting style of each stone. Consistent measurements provide a useful basis for comparing different stones, assessing their proportions and recording their physical characteristics. For meaningful comparisons, use the same measurement units and take each dimension at its widest or deepest relevant point.
Understanding the results#
The length-to-width ratio provides a simple way to compare the outline proportions of gemstones, particularly stones with elongated shapes. A ratio closer to 1 indicates that the length and width are more similar, while a higher ratio indicates a more elongated outline.
The bounding-box volume is calculated by multiplying the measured length, width and depth. It represents the volume of a rectangular box enclosing the stone, not the volume of the gemstone itself. Faceted stones contain angled surfaces and empty space within this bounding box, so their actual volume depends on the shape and cut. The results are intended for dimensional comparison and preliminary geometric assessment, not for determining carat mass or gemstone value.
Model and limitations#
Length-to-width ratio
$$ R=\frac{\text{length}}{\text{width}} $$
Rectangular bounding-box volume
$$ V_{\mathrm{box}}=\text{length}\times\text{width}\times\text{depth} $$
Enter all three dimensions in millimetres to calculate the rectangular bounding-box volume in cubic millimetres (mm³).
These calculations describe the measured dimensions and the rectangular envelope surrounding the stone. They do not determine the actual volume or carat mass of a faceted gemstone. Such calculations require an appropriate shape model and, for mass estimation, the material’s density.
